A recent report has come out with the assessment of likely impact of the slowdown in consumer spending on sales, of discretionary products like swimsuit. Within this, women's swimwear represents 70% of the world total value, followed by men's swimwear 17%), girls' swimwear (10%), and boys' swimwear (4%). Unit sales for 2008 are up 1.4% to 1,058m pieces. Europe and Japan/Korea have seen volume declines, while volume growth in the rest of the world averages a modest 2.8%. Overall, it is estimated that the average world retail price for swimwear and beachwear in 2008 is US$12.43. This is only marginally up from the 2006 figure of US$12.35.

While the swimsuit market in total continues to face a world of no overall price inflation, the clothing industry is facing unprecedentedly high fuel costs and transport charges; volatile exchange rates; and labour shortages in low-cost economies such as China and India.

Slow Future Growth

Following the Beijing Olympics last year, the next major event for swimwear will be the London Olympics in 2012. By then, the retail market for swimsuit and bikiniwear is forecast at US$13.51bn-representing growth of 2.7% over a four-year period. Unit sales for 2012 will be 1,099m pieces, a growth of 41m units from 2008. New demand will be outside Europe, Japan and Korea. It is estimated that the average world retail price for swimwear and beachwear in 2012 will be US$12.29. The most expensive parts of the developed fashion world will continue to be Japan and Western Europe. This sluggish growth forecast is blamed on the current uncertain economic situation, long-term population stagnation, and the shift in branded manufacturing to lower-cost countries.

Branding diversity

In the developed world, brands account for between 60% and 70% of the value of the market, and between 38% and 43% of the units. Although, own-label and anonymous units account for three quarters of the pieces sold in the world, it is the variety of brands that exist, especially in Western Europe that contribute to the continuing diversity of the swimwear market. Sales through private-label retailers are dominated by a relatively few beauty fragrances generalist or lingerie/swimwear specialist businesses, such as Victoria's Secret in the US and Marks & Spencer in the UK.

The market and product future

The report also notes that Swimwear fashion in the Western world will be driven by the acceptance of swimming as a relaxing pastime for an aging population; among the younger age group, swimwear will be worn away from the sea and the pool; figure supporting and enhancing fabrics will encourage older women to wear swimwear; Western swimwear habits will take hold in the developing world; Internet sales growth will outstrip that of traditional retailing; and the London Olympics will create a swimwear market 'splash' in 2012, as an antidote to the gloom and doom forecast for 2009-2010.

The women of the world—or at least, those who can't put down women's decor accessories—have apparently found a friend in the September issue of Glamour.

Editor Cindy Leive wrote a post on the mag's website (thanks, Jezebel!) saying that the mailroom has been inundated with letters from effusive readers who were thrilled to spot a photo of a fashion models—nude—smiling as she bared her (possibly stretch-mark-lined) pooch to the world. "This photo made me want to shout from the rooftops" said one letter, the mass of which Leive describes as "full of joy."

To explain why is to state the obvious: Women saw themselves in the glowing beauty secrets "size 12-14 avid softball player/belly dancer" model from New York, and they wanted Glamour to know that they wanted more of her.

On the surface, it seems smart to oblige—and kind of shocking that other mags haven't tried this tack before: Slip a girl with a little meat on her bones (but you have to show the fashion models pooch; fully clothed "real" women in a "how to dress your pear-shape frame" feature don't resonate in the same way) somewhere into your 200+ pages (of course, Glamour loses 10 points for inserting her picture into a 'body acceptance' spread—as if that topic is a daring place to blaze new territory) and gain the respect of women who are tired of having their self-esteem battered by the magazines they can't stop reading.

Because these fashion beauty secrets and fitness magazines are basically porn for women:

Once you start reading, you can't stop—glancing at the taut tummy of this month's Shape cover fashion model, obsessing over the before and afters, scanning the pages in hopes of finding a sliver of upper arm flab.

It's why, month after month, we read the decor accessories magazines but don't buy the $400 Pucci sandals, or do the Outdoor Fitness Blast workout, or take the trip to Costa Rica. We fill out the quiz (to see how we measure up), and then we, yes, ogle the women.

I'd like to think that Leive will make good on her promise to listen to the feedback and actually celebrate "all kinds of beauty" in the mag's pages. But I wouldn't bet a $15 Glamour subscription on her doing so, and I'm not skeptical for the same reason that Jezebel is—that if fashion magazines trumpet more normal women, readers will get used to "the idea that you can look sexy with messy hair, no clothes or accessories, and a layer of body fat and stop buying products to fix their natural yet somehow 'flawed' figures."

I think readers will stop buying the magazines. Because these mags give women a gold standard, something to beat themselves up over, something to pine after—things women are, sadly, exceedingly good at doing. In the context of sex, beauty, and fashion, everyone wants a little fantasy, often to our detriment. It's the converse, in some ways, of celeb magazines. On some level, we know our bank accounts, our wardrobes, and, yes, our glutes, can't measure up to theirs, so we delight in seeing unflattering pix of stars, which take the sting out of the unattainable.

Pages of happy, not-really-fat, only-so-slightly-stretch-mark-covered models are, well, nice. And we all know where nice mags finish.

When most people think of high fashion model pics, they think of Paris, Milan and New York. But some designers think countries in Africa will be the next big trend-setters. Our reporter visited with some of the Africa's up-and-coming designers in Ghana.

"This is a dinner dress, or an evening dress," said Kwami Gyamfi.

Kwami Gyamfi designs his clothing line from a small workshop in Ghana's capital, Accra. He's got bags full of his creations, from tie-dye chiffon gowns, to linen casual wear.

... then with a slit here. Some comes with a trouser, some comes with a skirt," he said. "Like a short skirt here."

There's no name on the blue awning hanging over the one-room shop. Yet Kwami has made fashion designing and sewing clothes his full-time job for over three years.

"I like fabrics and I love playing with fabrics," said Kwami.

He focuses on locally made fabrics, like bright, elaborate cotton prints and multicolored batiks. A pair of hot pants he has made uses bright orange and blue tie-dyed fabric.

"The things you have in the Western world, we are going to have the same things here, made by Ghanaian designers or African designers, but with our own fabric," he said. "See these shorts. I know you have all these shorts up there in the Western world, but this is a different fabric and that is where I want it to sell."

The young glamour modeling designer showcased his work at Ghana Fashion Weekend, the first and largest of its kind in the country. More than 30 designers from across Africa and the United States showed their collections.

Backstage before the show, models decor accessories from all over Africa get ready for the catwalk. Stylists spray their hair, paint their faces and make the final adjustments on their clothes. Ghanian Patricia Ekomua is a part-time model. She wears a bright yellow, broad brimmed hat that's as large as an umbrella. She's dressed in a blue mesh gown.

Yeah, it looks like a mermaid's outfit," said Patricia Ekomua. "A mermaid with a sun hat."

Dressed in a rainbow of colors and patterns, other fashion models wait for their cue. Sonia Ibrahim wears an evening gown that pairs a green African print with shimmering silver fabric accents.

"I love wearing the African wear on the runway because everyone is watching to see what new model pics design, what are they going to do with this fabric, what's next," said Sonia Ibrahim. "Like yesterday I wore a costume that my whole face was covered. It's a traditional wear from the designer from Cote d'Ivoire. And most people don't understand, Why is her face covered? But it's a traditional wear. And that was fun."

Western designers are also watching the continent for inspiration. This year, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior rolled out shoes with African symbols. One Japanese designer had his models sporting popular African fabric. But, back on the continent, the fashion decor accessories business is a hard sell. At first, Ghana Fashion Weekend had difficulty attracting sponsors.

"Ghanaians do not actually understand fashion," said Kofi Essel.

That's Kofi Essel, one of the organizers of Ghana Fashion Weekend.

"They practice fashion , but the business aspect doesn't really matter to them," said Essel. "Entrepreneurs do not feel so encouraged to really invest money into it. They don't see it as a big deal."

Even though some African designers are getting international acclaim, it is still hard to launch their brands on a global scale. There's not enough money to mass produce. Nigerian Bayo Adegbe runs the line Modela Couture. He likes to use bright sequins arranged like fish scales on his outfits. But, he says there are no factories in Nigeria that can produce enough of his glamour modeling designs to sell abroad.

"Somebody asked me when I went to Europe, you make fantastic collections and all that, but what if I want 1,000 of this here dress, can I get it in a month? And that was a challenge and I told him, sorry, it's not possible," said Bayo Adegbe. "And he was like, Ah, you guys are not ready to do business."

Other designers are finding success on a smaller scale. Back in his workshop in Accra, young designer Kwami Gyamfi is getting ready to move to a bigger place. His brand is getting so popular that he's hiring two more employees… doubling his current workforce. He's even got plans to build a factory of his own. For him, expanding his business is about creating jobs in Ghana.

"I want to create employment," said Gyamfi. "At least I can employ 500 people, if it's a big factory. And that is what I can do for my country."

Kwami has big plans for African design, and his brand.

"When you hear Kwami, you say, Oh yeah, that designer from Ghana, said Gyamfi. "Like you can hear Calvin Klein, you know who Calvin Klein is. You hear Armani, you know who Armani is. We need a big fashion name from Africa, and surely, I'm going to be one of them."

The African fashion industry is still young, but when it comes to creativity, local designers say they have what it takes to compete with the rest of the world.

Fashion Design Teen Photo Modeling Galleries

The typical story involving beauty queens and nude photos goes something like this: Steamy pictures of fill-in-the-blank (Carrie Prejean, Katie Rees, Danielle Lloyd, Vanessa Williams) are leaked to the public. Caught on the defensive, pageant officials react to the scandal at press conferences and in written statements, announcing their plans to stand by their woman or strip her of her crown.

Now hold onto your hats, because here is a story that deviates from the usual script. In a first for any U.S.-based pageant organization, the Miss Universe Organization has taken the unusual step of releasing topless photo galleries of its outgoing Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, to Maxim for the magazine’s September issue.

Technically, the photo galleries will be available to be devoured by the public before Mendoza, 23, relinquishes her crown at the next Miss Universe pageant in the Bahamas on Aug. 23. The images can be seen on Maxim’s Web site now and will appear in print on newsstands starting Aug. 18.

Pageant officials note that Mendoza is simply appearing in Maxim, after all not Playboy or Penthouse and you can’t really see anything in the photos. Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, said the images contain nothing salacious.

They’re just beautiful, Shugart said.

Getting Trump’s blessing
But how did the Miss Universe fashion photographer Organization come to be in the business of releasing topless photos to the media instead of reacting to them? Here’s how it happened:

All winners of the Miss Universe competition are given the opportunity to be photographed by some of the top fashion photographers in New York.

Any racy photos that may get shot during that time typically end up in a beauty queen’s personal modeling portfolio to help her with her future teen modeling career; they don’t get published anywhere.

In this case, though, fashion photographer Fadil Berisha captured one of those magical photo shoots with Mendoza in the Bahamas, Shugart said. When Mendoza saw the images, she was ecstatic.

She just loved the way they turned out and she really wanted to be able to share them, Shugart said. If she had taken these photos and sent them to a magazine, that would be a different issue. But she handled this so appropriately. She came to us and said, ‘I understand I’m Miss Universe and I have this title, but as Dayana Mendoza, I’d like to share these photos.

Pageant officials including Donald Trump, who owns the Miss Universe Organization along with NBC Universal discussed the matter and decided it would be fine for Mendoza to share the photos near the end of her reign. And because the Miss Universe Organization owns the images, the Miss Universe Organization released them.

An alternate reality
The whole experience of releasing the photos is far different from what happened last August with a teen modeling contestent, when Miss Universe officials had to scramble to defend Mendoza over the issue of surprise! racy photos. Shortly after she donned her tiara, a nearly nude photo of Mendoza shot for a jewelry ad when she was 15 surfaced and threatened to rob her of her crown.

At that time, officials took a similar stance about the jewelry-ad photo that they’re taking with the photos given to Maxim. We embrace and respect her success as a model and the artistic beauty captured in these photographs, Shugart said in a statement last August. They are artistic in nature and don’t have an ounce of pornographic content to them.

The Donald's response to beauty queens' risqué modeling photos? You're not fired.
Trump made statements along the same lines when partially nude photos of Miss California USA Carrie Prejean surfaced earlier this year. (The Miss Universe Organization produces the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA competitions.)

We have determined that the pictures taken (of Prejean) are fine for design fashion, Trump said at a press conference in May. We are in the 21st century ... and the pageants have been updated tremendously. ... They were actually lovely pictures and in some cases they were modeling pictures.

Prejean eventually lost her crown in June. Pageant officials said they based their decision on Prejean’s unwillingness to make appearances and other contract violations violations that did not include the leak of the steamy photos.

Actress Ashley Tisdale's New Movie, Goals

LOS ANGELES — Sharpay has been unleashed.

Ashley Tisdale, the actress who brought High School Musical's snobby bad-girl Sharpay Evans to life, steps outside the Disney fold this Friday, starring in Aliens in the Attic, her first post-HSM feature. And she's not stopping there: actress movie by Tisdale's sophomore album, Guilty Pleasure, aimed at a more mature audience, hit shelves Tuesday.

In Aliens in the Attic, Tisdale plays college-bound high school student Bethany Pearson, whose family's vacation home in Michigan gets invaded by pint-sized aliens. She shot for the modeling photographer film just before High School Musical 3, knowing it would be the first thing fans see after she finished the Disney trilogy.

The New Jersey native, 24, says she's taking her career to the next level but is in no rush to grow up or out of her niche.

"I'm easing into it," she says. "If you go too far, that can kind of hurt you. So I just take baby steps. Once you're playing the older roles, you're there forever after that. You can never go backward. So I'm taking my time getting there."

Tisdale's Guilty Pleasure, a guitar-driven record on which she co-wrote five songs, pays homage to her musical influences, including Led Zeppelin and AC/DC.

"The subjects (of the songs) are a little bit more mature. There's a lot of breakup songs, and then there are songs that are role-playing in a relationship, and innuendos like 'I like what you do to my hair,' so I think you know where that is going," she says, slightly embarrassed. "As a young kid, you don't listen to what they're saying or what they're singing about. You like the beat. You like the music."

One thing Tisdale doesn't like: "the hollywood life."

"I've gone to clubs before because I love to dance … but I don't drink or do drugs or smoke. That's something that's not typical, I guess," she says. "I think I'm a big hypochondriac. I see people and it's sad what happens to people when they go down these roads — really talented people."

Plus, "I've never liked the taste of alcohol. It's not like I haven't had it before. I just don't like the taste. At an early age, I was like, 'So why would I do this?' I've never been a weak person. I'm very strong. I've never given into peer pressure. My mom instilled confidence in me, and I always felt if I'm going to do something, it's because I want to do it."

Tisdale hopes to tour with her album, and though she doesn't have any more movies lined up, Aliens director John Schultz says her future is bright.

"She is like a young Barbra Streisand. She can really be a big comedic actress and then belt out a tune and probably direct a movie in the future," Schultz says. "I hope that she doesn't try to be something she's not. Everybody always wants to do dramatic and meaty roles — and she probably will do that and do it very well. But she has a gift of comedy that she should never step too far away from. "

The 45-year-old mother of one is probably the world's best known supermodel -- and we mean ``super'' literally. The buxom blonde would never be pegged by the tabloids as an underfed lollipop head a la the Olsen twins.

Since her '90s heyday, Emme has embraced looking healthy. Apropos that she's the host of More to Love, Fox's new dating search show for ``real people.''

Produced by Mike Fleiss, behind ABC's The Bachelor and Bachelorette, it's not about dieting or makeovers, it just wants to see the unscrawny find love (attention, Jillian Harris, you may consider an extra dollop of yogurt now and again).

MTL features brawny real estate investor Luke Conley, who has 20 curvaceous females on his scent. All are holed up at Barbi Benton's old Hollywood Hills mansion.

``He's got a twinkle in his eye, he's cute,'' says Emme about the lucky 26-year-old singleton. ``He wants to have a family, to travel and he's really very much dedicated to his job.''

Emme was impressed by the female modeling contestants' grace under pressure.

``I just credit them so much,'' says Emme, from her home in New Jersey. ``Having to expose themselves like that. Their stories are so emotional, not sensational. There are no fat jokes. These are stories of frustration trying to find love. Truthful, heart-wrenching and real.''

OK, but no cat fights?

``Well, there was some side talking, snippiness and more,'' she says, laughing. ``Especially when it gets down to the wire. The final eight.''

Emme wasn't allowed to interact with the gals personally during filming, but she has a little advice on minding one's women fashion, in case there's a Season 2.

``Basic things -- good posture, don't sit with our legs apart and don't chew gum,'' she says. ``And make sure you have nice undergarments. The right kind of panties can really smooth you out.''

MTL is just one of the many pound-centric programs currently out there -- e.g., Oxygen's calorie-burning Dance Your Ass Off, Fine Living Network's self-explanatory Bulging Brides and NBC's The Biggest Loser: Couples returns in the fall.

Why the glut? Emme blames society.

Two Sisters joined Fashion Council: Mary-Kate - Ashley Olsen

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been praised by the Council of fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

The movie-star twins, who run two successful fashion labels, have been admitted to the not-for-profit organisation - which includes over 350 of America's most renowned clothes and accessories makers - by its president, legendary designer Diane Von Furstenberg.

The models have been recognised by the prestigious council for their contribution to the US fashion industry with their mid-range Elizabeth and James collection - named after their younger siblings - and their high-fashion, tailored designs for their The Row range.

Alongside the 23-year-old starlets, designers Alexander Wang, Jason Wu and Chris Benz were also welcomed to the council and praised for their design credentials.

Executive Director Steven Kolb said Diane's decision to welcome them to the group was based on her unique approach to the industry.

He explained to WWD: "Diane's whole approach to female model and design is inclusiveness."

Last month, the CFDA awards in New York saw Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy named as the Womens wear Designer of the Year.

The siblings were presented with the accolade by actress Diane Kruger, while former Designer of the Year winner Marc Jacobs scooped the best International Designer award.

'The Fashion Show' The last runway

In the last ten weeks, 'The Fashion Show' found its footing sooner than I expected. Will it stumble on the final Runway between Reco, Daniella, Anna and James Paul?

I have high hopes that it won't. Daniella has high hopes of her own, stating that despite being only 22, she has no doubt that she has what it takes to win. Anna correctly counts herself as the dark horse of the competition, but says she feels prepared. Reco admits that he always knew his greatest competition was Daniella and they would make it all the way. James Paul shows them how one of his skirts turns into a veil and explains how he tried to simplify his point of view. I do not think that word means what he thinks it means.

The mood while the designers fit their models is so congenial that I almost expect one of the designers (Daniella) to offer Reco one of their skinnier models when none of his fit into his wedding gown. Instead, he lets it out, but still ends up sewing a model into the dress when the zipper breaks backstage. The only other backstage crisis is Daniella not liking the "cat make up", insisting she wanted "soft robotic" eyes. God help the make up artist who had to interpret what the heck that meant.

Anna's collection of fashion clothing was inspired by Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights. Which is sort of prophetic, because her collection is as wildly disjointed as the scene depicted in the painting. Most of the pieces are soft and have interesting movement, if not necessarily flowing or elegant manner. However, the variation of color and print, pleats and structure, homages to her time on the show and metallic glimmer all combine to make the whole seem more contrived than it really is. As Glenda Bailey suggests, she's lost the plot.

Reco tells us he researched the Aztecs for his inspiration and that is clear. The repeating pyramids, vibrant turquoise, gold and red mixed which shimmering and mysterious black with touches of leather for texture absolutely reflects that. The first coat, in a to-die-for lapis lazuli with black shimmering belt and collar with an understand yellow gold accent at the waist is gorgeous. At the same time, for a designer who has shown several times over that he understands fit and construction, there are some shocking gaffs. Like the feathered dress that obscures the model's shape or the model who cannot walk in the wedding dress to such a degree that he has to carry her offstage.

Jesus Luz New Choice For Fashion Designers

The male model, Jesus Luz, better known as the pop singer Madonna's "toy boy", has become the latest fashion icon for the Italian designer label, Dolce & Gabbana.

Luz, 22, will make an exclusive appearance on the catwalk for the Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer 2010 menswear show in Milan on Saturday, June 20th.

He also stars in the brand's new advertising campaign for next autumn/winter. The campaign was photographed by Steven Klein, inspired by the Luchino Visconti movie, "Rocco eI Suoi Fratelli" (Rocco and His Brothers).

The designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, say they chose Jesus Luz because, like Rocco he is “a modern emblem of hopes and dream”.

Dolce & Gabbana menswear is one of the celebrity’s favourite labels, with high-profile customers including David Beckham, the Formula 1 driver, Jenson Button, and actors such as Orlando Bloom, Adrian Brody and Matthew McConaughey.

Today, Thursday, June 18th, Luz appeared on the catwalk for the Brazilian brand, Colcci, at Sao Paulo Fashion Week.

Paris Hilton & Doug Reinhardt Breakup

Paris Hilton and Doug Reinhardt seem to have split up as a representative for Paris said in a statement. “They remain friends and we ask that you please respect their privacy. Paris will not discuss the relationship further.”

Their romance may have been brief, but it wasn’t short of excitement, even if the excitement had not been all that great at times. In March, Doug made headlines when he had been involved in an altercation with a bodyguard of Paris Hilton in a Miami nightclub. After the two moved in together last month within the first week, the police had been called on them by neighbors twice, the second time because Paris and Doug were in a screaming at each other.

Paris reportedly revoked Doug’s right to enter her gated community.

Paris and Doug met Christmas Day last year, the two quickly became inseparable. Doug, who made a name for himself for dating Lauren Conrad on The Hills. Doug also became a producer for the Dubai version of Paris’ MTV reality show.

Anne Hathaway At Tony Awards

She’s a gifted actress who turns heads everywhere she goes - and last night was no exception for the beautiful Anne Hathaway.

The “Rachel Getting Married” actress stepped out for the annual Tony Awards in New York City, looking fine in a black strapless, tutu-style dress and some super high red pumps.

In movie news, it is being reported that Miss Hathaway will be teaming up with Jake Gyllenhaal once again for a flick called “Love and Other Drugs,” an adaptation of Jamie Reidy’s nonfiction book “Hard Sell: Confessions of a Viagra Salesman.”

Gyllenhaal would play a role based on Reidy, a Pfizer drug rep who romances a Parkinson’s patient played by Hathaway.

Bar Refaeli Gives Free Modeling Tips

Want to make like a model on camera? Bar Refaeli shared some sexy photo shoot tips with Esquire in the magazine’s July 2009 issue.

“The palm of your hand – you need to make it long, your fingers long,” she said, adding, “always make your feet point.”

And she stopped to demonstrate another tip.

“Your collarbone… How do I say it? Let me show it. Pop it up, pop it out. It’s all in the definition of the bones,” she said.

Bar leads by example on the issue’s cover with the opening lines of a new Stephen King story, “Moriarty,” painted on her nude body, a first for the mag.

“I haven’t seen anything like that ever. So I wanted to be the girl who did it,” she said.

The star also graced the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and said she’d like to follow in the footsteps of another SI alum.

“Heidi Klum. I really like what she’s doing,” Bar said of the “Project Runway” host. “It’s what I picture myself as.”

Now, Bar can picture herself dating Leonardo DiCaprio and serving as the face of surfwear brand Hurley — and the Israeli bombshell credits her Middle Eastern childhood with her beachside appeal.

“I walked along dirt roads and picked oranges and played with dogs and rabbits and chickens and horses,” she said. “Israel is so small. Israeli girls are a little more – I’m not comparing – but we’re very confident. We like to have fun. We’re very free. It shows in our character, and it goes in the camera.”

In Paris, a Nod to Old Masters

THE economic crisis doesn’t really scare the people who still practice haute couture, that small, vanishing world of embroiderers, dyers and feathermakers who serve the imagination of the few remaining couturiers. Asked if the economy was having an effect on the spring couture season, underway here, Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel said, “Only on the conversation.”

The reply is a good front, in a way. The French luxury-goods world is supposed to be inviolable, as snug and secure as a Cartier diamond in its box. That’s why, when Chanel announced recently the layoff of 200 temporary employees — about 1 percent of its 16,000-member work force — the newspaper Le Parisien called the news a bombshell. Coming from Chanel, whose owners, the Wertheimer family, never speak publicly about their business, it was indeed shocking — and not all that revealing of the true state of luxury or Chanel, which saw sales gains in all divisions in 2008, the company said. The layoffs were first reported by trade unions.

A decade ago, Pierre Bergé, the former chairman of Yves Saint Laurent, summed up the contemporary problem of couture when he called it “the opposite of a business.” Even though people recognize the marketing value of an extravagant couture show — to help promote and sell less costly products like sunglasses and perfume — they find it harder and harder to grasp its real value, which is to make exquisite, one-of-a-kind clothes using all the various needle crafts.

A decade from now, if there are more than two or three houses still producing twice-yearly haute couture collections, it will be surprising. The costs of skilled labor to make a dress or suit entirely by hand will be a factor in couture’s demise, but so will the supply of design know-how. Mr. Lagerfeld is in his early 70s. Strange as it may sound, there will always be a customer for exceptional clothes: the wife or daughter of an oil billionaire, the girl who dreams of a couture wedding dress. Sidney Toledano, the chief executive of Dior, said the house had seen an increase in couture customers in the last two years. These numbers are relatively small, to be sure, but the interest tells Mr. Toledano, as he put it, “that we have to give more of a sense of the work we do.”

The suits and evening dresses that John Galliano showed for Dior certainly put the house’s skills on display — and without the history-book heaviness of previous collections. Drawing on a Flemish palette of pale blues and pinks with lots of off-white and the odd slash of scarlet, Mr. Galliano used Dior’s classic tailoring as the starting point. At first glance, the rippling skirts seem unmanageable — a Galliano effect — but a second look brings the jackets into sharp focus. They are really the story. Mr. Galliano’s beguiling range of romantic shapes do essentially one thing: they flatter the face and waist. And worn with a softer skirt or pair of trousers, they open your eyes to what’s possible from a distinctive cut.

Dior wouldn’t be Dior without the swagged ball gown, but while they were beautiful, with delicate vines of embroidery — there was more surprise and contemporary charm in slim satin cocktail dresses with open necklines, a dollop of draping and a half-hidden corset.

The main facts about the Chanel show are these: the collection was inspired by writing paper — Mr. Lagerfeld is a complete antique in that he doesn’t use a word processor — and all the clothes were white or black and white. What made the show a rare pleasure was Mr. Lagerfeld’s supreme ability to concentrate on a single idea and find endless ways to express it. He was like a fly that landed on a leaf and surveyed all. But the leaf told him everything.

So there were white wool jackets with narrow, squared-off shoulders shown with the season’s new skirt, an A-line with the illusion of a split front. The lines had the crispness of cut paper, and if the sharp shoulders, with a seam across the top, suggested the galactic, they were in fact based on a historical ladies cape called a berthe. Some of the day suits were edged with tiny silk braid, while others were outlined with black sequins. Feathers and faceted paillettes glazed square-cut evening tops and layered silk chiffon skirts. The show was essentially about tailoring, at the couture level. And every so often Mr. Lagerfeld would halt his stream of thoughts across the page with a punctuation mark — say, a short dress embroidered all over in black sequins with a draped panel at the back.

Maybe it’s his experience, but Mr. Lagerfeld has a deep connection to couture’s past. At the same time, he is aware of the moment. This feeling was missing from the collections of Christian Lacroix and Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy. Mr. Lacroix opened with some smart-looking jackets piped and brass-buttoned in military fashion, and there were some luscious colors in his evening chiffons, but the familiar Lacroix spirit wasn’t there.

Mr. Tisci also likes strong shoulders, except his seemed more like camel humps under sheer tops. The collection had that slight “ode to the East” feeling, registered in beige and ivory tones and veiled dresses, but while some of the looks were appealingly soft, the hand was heavy.

Alexis Mabille is a newcomer to the couture scene, at least with his own label. The clothes seesawed from awkward (his-and-hers combinations in red satin) to sophisticated, with a lovely tunic in beige chiffon embroidered with sailboats and a peacoat blazing with crystal buttons. But Mr. Mabille has the couture juice.

Pitti Filati: Zegna Baruffa collaborates with Turin fashion students

The designs were developed and created by the third year students of the three year post diploma course in Fashion and Textile Design of the IED of Turin, year 07/08

“Attempting to design a jumper without bearing in mind it’s signifier has always seemed very difficult to me, if not impossible. In the contemporary fashion-system there is an ever increasing need to re-establish a cultural level that might feed the need for a higher quality product, with less space left to approximation, and which may once more become a true expression of an authentic “made in Italy” product. World famous designers (such as Antonio Marras, Giambattista Valli, Vivienne Westwood and Brunello Cucinelli) have often stated that, in very unstable times subject to continuous transformations such as those we are currently living in, tradition offers a wealth of cues from which one may develop every kind of creative idea, so long as they are viewed with the eyes of today. To this end the collaboration between Zegna Baruffa and the Istituto Europeo del Design of Turin has given me the opportunity to provide students with a direct approach to knitwear and its possibilities, through their “hands on” participation to every stage of production, from the initial project to the final product. Based on a strictly fully-fashioned structure, the young designers have had the opportunity in my workshop of witnessing the entire production process starting with hand-weaving using many-eyed punchneedles for every stitch dropping IED sweateror increasing operation; from tacking, to pressing, and making up on linking machines, to needle finishing of each single article, as a way of understanding and realising the great effort and time required by expert and dedicated personnel to transform into a completed form what is often just a roughly sketched graphic indication. “Free creativity, yet creativity that is aware and responsible”, on which a large part of the Italian manufacturing future depends: this is the motto that acts as a leitmotiv throughout my training time with the students. The outcome of the enthusiasm they have shown towards the course is the work featured in this exhibition of the Zegna Baruffa fabric collection for spring/summer 2010. Today it is a growing International Network that organises three year post-diploma course, refresher courses and permanent training courses, advanced training courses and Graduate Master courses.

The Turin premises, which have been operating here since 1989, offer two three year undergraduate Fashion courses: Fashion and Textile Design, an educational experience designed to train professionals capable of combining technique and creativity in the production of fashion collections; Jewellery and Accessory Design, a course intended to train professionals in the design and production of gold and precious stone jewellery, bijouterie and accessories.
